Although Emmanuel Levinas is widely respected as one of the classic thinkers of our century, the debate about his place within Continental philosophy continues. Since the modern faith in Reason has died, the way is reopened for a thorough discussion of the relations between philosophy and theology. Being metaphilosophical as well as meta theological, such a discussion presupposes solid acquaintance with the concrete praxis of philosophy and theology as existentially rooted enterprises developed in the history of particular cultures and individual persons. This article defends the thesis that philosophy in the modern sense of the word never has been and cannot be autarkic because it (...) cannot demonstrate the truth of the faith from which it draws its basic stance and orientation. If this faith is the faith of a Christian, it is impossible to draw a sharp distinction between the philosophical and the theological activities of such a philosopher. The stubborn attempt to restrict one’s thought to autonomous philosophy wounds and paralyzes the thinking of Christians and destroys most of its relevance. The old synthetic conception of philosophia, upheld by Plato and the Stoics no less than by the Fathers of the Church, deserves a reevaluation. Despite the profound differences between unscientific premodernity and modern scientificity, that old conception is a more adequate description of the philosophical practice performed in real human lives. Philosophers speak—or, rather, they respond to various forms of speaking that are handed to them. This book by one of our most distinguished philosophers focuses on the communicative aspect of philosophical thought. Peperzak’s central focus is “addressing”: what distinguishes speaking or writing from rumination is their being directed by someone to someone. There is a didactical as well as a philosophical importance to providing a commentary on the Preface to Hegel's handbook on the philosophy of right. Considering the fact that the text brings us the thought of a great and difficult philosopher in a non-rigorous, "exoteric" way, it is well suited to the task of introducing students to the world of think ing. It is, however, too difficult to do this without being supplemented by some explanation. Analysis and hints for further (...) study are necessi tated here by both the interweaving of political and philosophical viewpoints and the philosophical presuppositions with which this Preface is full. The philosophical importance of a commentary on Hegel's text can be found partially in the incessant quotation of the Preface in the literature on Hegel's philosophy to justify very different and contra dictory interpretations. As long as the specialists do not agree about the meaning of the Preface to the Philosophy of Right, anyone trying to explain it cannot avoid the task of making his or her own contribu tion to the philosophical debate concerning the nature and content of Hegel's work. Comprendre la tyrannie, retrouver les critères qui nous permettent de l’apercevoir et d’en juger correctement, telle est la fin que Leo Strauss assigne explicitement à son étude du Hiéron de Xénophon. Pourtant, la lecture du livre peut aisément donner l’impression qu’il y est moins question de la tyrannie proprement dite que du rapport entre le philosophe et le politique, ou entre la sagesse et la loi. La préoccupation pour la tyrannie semble ainsi s’effacer devant une préoccupation plus générale sur la (...) nature de la philosophie politique classique dans son ensemble. Nous voulions toutefois ici prendre plus au sérieux l’intention de Strauss, et nous efforcer de comprendre son argumentation ou « enseignement » sur la tyrannie. (shrink)

Cet article essaie de définir la phénoménologie comme une recherche du „phénomène vrai” (Aristote), dans lequel s'identifient expérience et vérité. I. Par une réflexion sur le perspectivisme inhérent à toute perception, on conclue à l'impossibilité d'une description pure et neutre. Le „monde de la perception” précédant toute interprétation n'est qu'un moment abstrait de l'expérience totale, dont nulle méthode ne peut l'isoler comme s'il était quelque chose de concret. Une phénoménologie, qui, par sa description, veut séparer ce moment abstrait du tout (...) de l'expérience réelle, souffre d'un dualisme anthropologique. II. A cause de l'interaction qu'il y a entre le monde vécu de l'expérience totale d'une part, et chaque perception partielle de l'autre, la compréhension des perceptions particulières suppose que l'on comprenne la diversité des mondes vécus comme différentes „figures de la conscience”. Cette compréhension se développe selon deux niveaux: 1. celui d'une typologie phénoménologique des différentes „figures” ou „ visions” du monde, et 2. celui d'une répétition philosophique de ces „mondes”. Avec et contre Hegel on essaie de montrer par quel „savoir” la conscience est guidée pendant son voyage de découverte: une certitude qui connaît la vérité comme le terme mystérieux du désir fondamental de l'homme. Ce terme, dont personne n'a une connaissance concrète avant de s'être risqué jusqu'au bout dans l'aventure de l'expérience vivante, n'est pas l'Ithaca d'une réflexion sans âge, mais le pays lointain dont on n'a jamais fini de découvrir un peu plus la nouveauté. L'exode de cette quête du mystère lontain et surprenant, reste fidèle à la terre en scrutant son secret. L'individualité humaine, perspective radicale englobant toute l'expérience, empêche que la vérité se donne autrement qu'à travers le dialogue. (shrink)

Osteons are cylindrical structures of bone created by matrix resorbing osteoclasts, followed by osteoblasts that deposit new bone. Osteons align with the principal loading direction and it is thought that the osteoclasts are directed by osteocytes, the mechanosensitive cells that reside inside the bone matrix. These osteocytes are presumably controlled by interstitial fluid flow, induced by the physiological loading of bones. Here I consider the stimulation of osteocytes while the osteon is closed by osteoblasts. In a conceptual finite element model, (...) bone is considered a poro‐elastic material and subjected to locomotion‐induced loading conditions. It appears that the magnitude of flow is constant along the closing cone, while shear strain rate in the bone matrix diminishes linearly with the deposition of bone. This suggests that shear strain rate, rather than fluid flow, is the physical cue that controls osteocytes and bone deposition in newly formed osteons. (shrink)
